Did you know that the marriage vows were meant to DEEPEN and STRENGTHEN our marriage!! We are living at a time when marriage is really being looked down upon, the marriage rate is falling. People don’t want to get married because they don’t want to give up their personal freedom and autonomy, but for any love relationship to thrive it is essential that all the parties involved should lay down their desire for freedom, autonomy, and self-fulfillment. In this week’s blog post we are writing about the FREEDOM that is found in our ‘Marriage vows.’
We are continuing our marriage devotional blog series where we are sharing what we have been learning from the book, ‘The Meaning of Marriage: A Couple’s Devotional’ by Timothy and Kathy Keller. Early into this year, we had decided to read this book together, to work on our marriage, because we realized that if we were to leave anything to neglect it’s bound to fall apart.

How Vows Help.
In every marriage relationship there are bound to be times of stress where we are tempted to give up. But our WEDDING VOWS reminds us that marriage is not only about desire but also duty. During times of conflict in our marriage when our thinking is confused these vows helps us to stick with our marriage. Times of anger, self-pity, and discouragement can put pressure on your marriage, and we need God’s help to quickly come to our senses in such instances.
We are living in a time when in our culture individual freedom, autonomy, and fulfillment are lauded as the highest values; but ‘thoughtful people know down deep that any love relationships at all means the loss of all three.’ The marriage vow requires us to maintain a LIFELONG RELATIONSHIP with our spouse, but today many do not want to give into those kinds of pressure, they believe that their love relationship does not require any external validation. ‘But the legal vows were not made to validate love but to DEEPEN and STRENGTHEN it.’ True freedom is known when we know that ‘there is someone who has SOLEMNLY PROMISED to be there for you through thick and thin.’
As always, we are praying for you, and we hope that this post would be a BLESSING for you!!
