In this blog series we have been working our way through The Meaning of Marriage: A Couple’s Devotional: A Year of Daily Devotions, by Timothy and Kathy Keller, and today we would like to deal with some ‘Marriage Foundations.’ You can read our earlier blog posts by clicking (Week 1; Week 2; and Week 3)

Marriage Is Regulated By God

God created us and the world that we live in, and so he has put his order and design into every aspect of our lives! God gave us marriage as a GIFT and so he REGULATES it, we can’t just make it out to be whatever we like it to be. The Bible reveals to us how we should conduct our marriage and so it serves to correct all cultural distortions of it. “If we honor God by mutually LOVING and SERVING our SPOUSE rather than ourselves—as the Bible prescribes—we transcend these historic distortions of marriage.” When we seek to live our lives in opposition to God’s created order and design chaos ensues. Our marriages “either REFLECTS and IMAGES God and participates in his ways and work, or it rejects them.”

The Only Relationship That Will Satisfy

We were made to have a loving RELATIONSHIP with God, the best relationships that we have in this world does not compare with that, even our marriage relationship! But because of our sin our relationship with God is broken, Jesus Christ came into this world to RESTORE our relationship with God. He did this by taking the punishment for our sins, he died on the cross for our sins. He was the only one who could take the punishment for our sins by bearing it himself as our substitute, because being the Son of God, he was holy and perfect, and that was what God had required (of the substitute.) But he didn’t die and remain in the grave, he came out of the grave on the third day and now he is living in heaven and he will never die. Believing that Jesus is the Son of God and that he died to take the punishment for your sins and rose again on the third day, your sins will be forgiven and you will be restored to a right relationship with God, to a new life. A life characterized by obedience to God manifested in practical holiness and genuine repentance, a turning away from your old way of life, as God himself comes to live in you. And one day you will get to live with Jesus forever because he has promised to all those who have trusted him, that he will return back again to this world to take them to be with him forever. This is the gospel (good news) that we believe in.

So here are some important takeaway that you can implement after reading this post.

  • Believe the gospel to mend your broken relationship with God, which is the only real relationship that will satisfy, because that is what we were made for.
  • Follow the pattern of marriage that God has commended.

We hope that this post would be helpful in some way to help strengthen your relationship with your spouse. We are praying for you!
